Dr. Ken Downes

Ken M. Downes, MD


Dr. Downes, a native of New Mexico, graduated from Tulane University, Summa cum laude, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He then returned to Albuquerque to obtain his medical degree at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine. Dr. Downes completed his Internship in Pennsylvania at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where he also served as Chief Resident. During this time, he traveled to the world-renowned Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India to complete specialized surgical training.

Upon completing residency, Dr. Downes spent a year working as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California. He then completed a subspecialty Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the world-renowned Oregon Health Sciences University Casey Eye Institute.

He is published across several medical journals and has given several talks and presentations of his research at national medical conferences. Dr. Downes is fully licensed in several states and board certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Downes joined Southwest Eyecare Specialists in 2017. He previously served as the counselor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology for the state of New Mexico from 2018-2021. Currently, Dr. Downes is a Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, and is the Southwest Eyecare fellowship site director for the Southwest Combined Cornea and Glaucoma fellowship program.

Dr. Downes speaks English and Spanish and in his free time enjoys the outdoors, skiing, cooking and spending time with his wife, daughter and two dogs.
