Katia E. Chavez, MD MPH
Dr. Chavez is joining Southwest Eyecare as our Cornea and Glaucoma Fellow. Dr. Chavez was born in Peru. She graduated college from Nova Southeastern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She obtained a Master’s in Public Health from Florida International University.
Dr. Chavez earned her Medical Doctorate from The University of Vermont College of Medicine. While in medical school, she worked to improve health care access for Hispanic farm workers in Vermont. As such, she received the 2014 Underrepresented in Medicine Award from The American Medical Association (AMA).
Dr. Chavez completed her internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Afterwards, she completed Ophthalmology residency at The Ohio State University. As a resident, she volunteered at the university’s Free Eye Clinic and cared for veterans at the Columbus and Dayton Veteran Affairs. Her dedicated work made her receive the prestigious 2019 Excellence in Residency Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). She has presented cornea research at national meetings.
Dr. Chavez is a board eligible ophthalmologist who speaks English and Spanish. She enjoys reading books, learning new languages, visiting national parks, and hiking. She has hiked Machu Picchu in Peru, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, and Mount Mansfield in Vermont.
