Cornea Care

The cornea is the outermost part of the eye, helping to focus light to produce clear vision. Its composition is made up of five layers of tissue—epithelium, Bowman’s layer, stroma, Descemet’s membrane, and endothelium—each having an important function that if damaged or not working properly, may diminish one’s vision.

There are many types of corneal conditions, all of which are mainly caused by injury, infection, or disease. Symptoms for these conditions vary, but typically consist of:

  • Blurred vision
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Discharge
  • Tearing

Determining if a patient has any corneal condition is typically part of every eye examination. If a corneal condition is confirmed, determining the best type of treatment is the next step. Some conditions can be treated with eye drops or medication but other conditions may require laser procedures such as Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK), Corneal Surgery, or Corneal Transplantation (full-thickness or partial-thickness).

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an exam with Southwest Eyecare today and our team will help you determine the best type of treatment.
